Today marked a full 5 weeks of going to the gym.  I feel I’ve learned a lot from the trainers there in a short time and am trying to incorporate different things everyday.  I know I promised videos on my youtube post the other day, but they aren’t ready yet.  So, here’s an idea of what I’ve been doing.

1.  Eat breakfast as soon as I get up.  This is the hardest part for me.

2.  Take vitamins and supplements.  I mentioned those here.

3.  Warm up on the elliptical machine for 5 minutes.

As of right now, we’ve learned a good chest routine, back routine, arms and legs. I do 3 sets of each exercise with 15-20 reps using moderate weight.  There are typically 5-7 exercises in each routine.  I always finish with the ab machine, 3 sets of 20, and 15-30 minutes of cardio.  I did the bike today for the first time and I can totally feel it in my gluteus maximus.  I’ve been battling illness and just didn’t feel like I had the energy to get a good workout in on the elliptical or treadmill.

Chest Routine-I’m sure there are official names for some of these exercises, but I don’t know them and you probably don’t either.  So, this is may best attempt at explanation.

1.  Dumb bell bench press while on the exercise ball.

2.  Dumb bell exercise where you bring the weights behind your head and back to above while laying back on the exercise ball.

3.  Chest exercise on the fly machine where you’re bringing your hands together.

4.  Chest press machine

5.  Up/downs-from a standing position, drop down and do a push up then get back to your feet and jump as high as you can.  Repeat for a set of 10.   I call this one the butt kicker.

6.  Finish with ab machine and cardio.

Next week, I’ll go over our back routine.  Remember, I’m no expert.  I’m just sharing the advice and exercises that my trainer has given me.  Always check with your doctor before starting an exercise routine.  Listen to your body and don’t overdo it.

This past Lion Chaser Monday, we looked at the Montgomery family who had just been featured on Extreme Makeover Home Edition. My wife and I just found out the show is coming to the Triad area of NC(Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point).  We have signed up to volunteer sometime between November 11 and 18.  The builder is in Lexington-Hedrick Creative Building-but all other information is being kept under wraps.  My challenge is that if you live in the area then go here and sign up to be a volunteer.  You will be able to take part in changing a family’s life, one brick at a time.  There’s a need for skilled and unskilled labor.  I am so excited to be able to participate in this.  Next Friday, there will be a pep rally in Lexington at Reeds Baptist Church.  We can talk about making a difference all we want, but here is a genuine opportunity that will affect an entire community.  Maybe you’re not in the area, but you can still pitch in by donating towards the project here.  And while I’m at it, here’s some love for Ty Pennington and his latest book.

My good friend Scott Simmons finished his first book and it has become a great discipleship tool that many youth groups are using.  Our group is almost through with the 10 week study and has thoroughly enjoyed it.  ifollow is a great resource for groups or individuals looking to take the next step in their journey with Christ.  Scott is the Director of Youth Ministries for the Wesleyan denomination.
Ifollow: Connecting Belief and Behavior to Who You Are in Christ

Welcome to the Planet is a great resource that will take your youth group through the 5 purposes of the church. This 6 week study includes powerpoints, outlines, transcripts, and games to help you promote and implement this great series.

If you watched Extreme Home Makeover last night then you heard the story of the Montgomery family and saw their lives changed.  Nathan left his engineering job to start Salt and Light, a ministry to the less fortunate.  Somewhere along the way, he and his wife decided to “Chase Their Lion” and because of that countless individuals have been fed, clothed, and helped in their time of need.  What if he had kept his old job and not pursued his purpose and passion?  How many lives have been changed because of his family’s sacrifice?  Sometimes, God births something in our heart that cannot be contained.  Fear and doubt creep in and try to dissuade us from walking in obedience.  Eventually, we must make the choice to pursue it with all we have or let the dream die a lonely, painful death.  Despite obstacles(and probably naysayers) the Montgomery’s allowed God’s vision to become reality in their lives.  There’s lots of coverage of their story here.  There are many videos covering various aspects of the show and their ministry.  It’s a great behind the scenes look at a great show, but also an up close look at the Montgomery family as well.  It’s inspiring stuff.  You can find out more about their ministry here and make a donation here.  They have have a Facebook page and a Twitter account.  Are you being salt and light?  A great ministry…a great family.

With cold and flu season upon us it is very important to look at ways to improve our immune system through proper diet, exercise, and rest.  It’s important to realize that taking care of our bodies and health year round is truly to key to preventing and overcoming common illnesses.  It doesn’t hurt to also use a little common sense and wash your hands often, don’t hang out with people who have the flu, and listen to your body.  If you feel an illness coming on then go ahead and rest up before it’s full blown.  Here are several articles discussing the topic.  You can also check out anytimehealth.com for various resources.

One of the greatest tragedies in the world today is that people are dying because they don’t have clean water. Daily I take for granted the ease with which I can fill and refill my glass, cup, bottle, with cool refreshing water(and ice).  The average American uses 150 gallons of water a day while many around the globe struggle to find 5(from the charitywater.org page).  It’s not about asking everyone to go overseas and physically dig a well.  It’s about all of us pitching in and doing what we can.  It’s about moving from the attitude, “How much do I have to give” to “How much can I give?” It’s about asking the question,”God, how do you want to use me in this?”  Scott Harrison has an amazing story.  Charity Water is the result of God getting a hold of one man’s life and how he responded.  What if we all responded to God with passion and vision? This is not a story for the lukewarm or faint of heart(faith).  This is story to plug into and make it part of your own.  Set aside some time to watch the video below and hear from Scott himself how he’s making the world a better place one glass of water at a time.  And by all means, join the clean water revolution by giving today.

Have you ever tried to pursue something, but you felt this weight that was holding you back? Have you ever felt that there were just some things that you could never get past? Have you ever carried a grudge for so long that it started to eat away at you from the inside? It is impossible for a person to “Chase Their Lion” while carrying a grudge or prejudice against groups of people.  You may be thinking to yourself,”I’m not prejudiced”, but certain thoughts and feelings crop up in certain situations or when you hear certain stories.  You may not be outwardly prejudice, but you harbor negative feelings towards different races, religions, or people.  This is an issue that cuts both ways and always hurts everyone involved.  Maybe yours is an issue more personal than that.  Maybe someone has hurt you and you carry anger and unforgiveness in your heart.  Whatever the case may be, we need to let go of the things that would hinder us.  We need to do whatever it takes to become the person God created us to be.  And God did not create us for hatred, bitterness, prejudice, or grudges.  He created us to love Him and love others and to express that through our service.  Here are some resources to help you change your thinking, overcome bitterness, and Chase Your Lion!

Tony Dungy is a rare man.  It’s not because he was the first African-American coach to win a Super Bowl.  It’s not because he’s one of only 3 men to win a Super Bowl as a player and a coach.  It’s not even because he walked away from coach at the top of his game.  No, Tony Dungy is rare in that he has accomplished all of this with a level of integrity and depth of faith and character that is “Uncommon.”  He may well be the most respected man in and around the NFL.  He left coaching to pursue a higher calling:  helping young people.  His highest profile case so far is Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback Michael Vick whom Dungy took under his wing while Vick was serving prison time for running an illegal dog fighting ring.  My respect for him only grew as he endured the toughest thing a parent can face, the tragic loss of his son, with bravery, dignity, and hope.  Here are some comments on that event and a great testimony from a Super Bowl breakfast a few years ago.

He is Lion Chaser because of his pursuit to serve Christ to the best of his abilities and use the platform he has been given to make a difference.  To find out more about him you can visit his bio here or his home page here. On top of all of this, he is a best selling author of two great books, Quiet Strength and Uncommon.  There are also small group materials available.  Tony Dungy:  a class act, a great coach, and a true Lion Chaser.
